Visual Communication Brief 2 Final Postcards

I'm really happy with how these have turned out although I think that they probably could have been improved slightly if I had more time but due to having to learn how to use illustrator during the course of this brief I didn't really have much time to work on the final pieces. I think the buildings could have been improved significantly also some of the use of colour also the second postcard looks a little bit too much like mordor rather than berlin but it does capture the atmosphere I was trying to get.

Visual Communication Brief 2 Visual Research

For my visual research I looked back to my research on the cold war for my COP brief, and filtered through for the stuff I could use for this brief luckily most of my research was on berlin. so I went through this then started to add more related to the end of ww2 and the holocaust memorial for the modern postcard.

Visual Communication Brief 2 Thumbnails

These are the thumbnails for my final postcards by this point I'd decided that I was definitely going to just do Berlin, but do it in 4 different eras specifically WW2, the start of the cold war and the end and also a modern one. I really wanted to try and capture the atmosphere of a changing city.

For the nazi postcard I really wanted to get an oppressive tone so I decided to include the huge theatrical style banners, and then contrast them against the size of the figure on the steps. at this point I was starting to move away from the initial museum idea.

For the second postcard I did Berlin at the end of WW2 and the start of the cold war, I was really trying to portray how much the city had been affected by the nazi regime and how it was about to be affected by the soviets.

for the third one I wanted to get the tone of the cold war specifically the divide caused by the berlin wall, I also used the snow in the image to not very subtly symbolise the cold war.

For my final image I really wanted to capture the tone of a city in remembrance but I don't think any of the thumbnails really got what I was going for in the end.

Visual Communication Brief 2 Early Illustrator Attempts

Theses are my first attempts at vectors as you can see they're very crude and I was very unhappy with them this was the point where I decided to work entirely with shape rather than incorporate line art that I wouldn't be happy with.

Visual Communication Brief 2 Initial Ideas

For this brief initially I started to come up with ideas for which city's I could do, I started to think of cities with iconic locations that would be instantly recognisable. I knew that Berlin was one city I definitely wanted to do, I knew this from my COP research on the cold war so I started to explore it more and started to look at the idea of different eras of the city and how at different points in the 20th century it was a completely different city and I found this fascinating and felt like it was something that I could base this project on. I also already had a lot of visual research left over from COP that helped significantly. So I decided to do 4 eras of Berlin and I started to look at which were most iconic.
