Visual Communication Studio Brief 3 Stamps Redone
Visual Communication Studio Brief 3 Stamps
These are my stamps i'm happy with the composition and general idea but the execution is really lacking so I think i'm going to redo these if I get a chance. The concept was to do each stamp based on Tarantino's cameo's in each film, the only problem was that in Kill Bill he's not explicitly shown he plays one of the dead body's but nobody's sure which one so I decided to a more generalised one for it. I think the colours work really well for these to tie them to the postcards.
Visual Communication Studio Brief 3 Postcards Colour
I scanned in my original postcards into photoshop and i'm really happy with how they've turned especially the Inglorious Basterds and Reservoir Dogs ones. I chose the colours by looking at the screen caps I took when researching the films and I realised each of them had a specific colour that was repeated a lot through out the film so I used that as a base colour and worked from there. I also removed all the unnecessary background details to make the images look much cleaner the only things I kept were the car boots as I thought they were essential to the concept of the pieces.
Visual Communication Studio Brief 3 Poster
Overall I'm happy with my poster specifically the composition my only problem with it is that at the moment it doesn't feel like a finished piece in the same way I didn't feel like my postcards felt like finished pieces. I think to rectify this i'm going to scan these images in and try adding colour in photoshop having a colour for each film that carries on across each set .

Visual Communication Studio Brief 3 Poster Composition
After seeing how successfully my postcards turned out I have decided to adapt my idea from lots of little thumbnails to 3 images from each film I did a postcard for. The composition below is the one i'm going to use with a large image on one side and two smaller images on the other changing the sides with each film to the composition balanced. I'm not sure which screen caps i'm going to use yet but I think for each large box i'm going to use an image of the main character from that film while the others will be key scenes. One reason for adapting the idea as well is that the idea of doing 100's of thumbnails was just unrealistic at this point with the amount of deadlines coming up. I think for my stamps i'm going to use each of Tarantino's cameos in the films to create a set like i did for the postcards.
Visual Communication Studio Brief 3 Postcards
These are my final post cards i'm really happy with how they've turned out especially the line quality and style which is something I developed from my visual research work for this brief. I think due to using the same shot in all of the postcards it really makes them a cohesive set and even if you only recognise one postcard you'll still recognise that they're all Tarantino films which is what I was going for with this. The only problem is that I don't think pencil works particularly well as a media for finished pieces but I think i've got away with it on these pieces.

Visual Communication Studio Brief 3 Digital Layout
This is when I realised the thumbnail idea wouldn't work I started to put together a digital collage layout for my poster I tried doing some digital versions of the thumbnails but I couldn't get them to a quality that i was happy with plus the amount of time this idea would have taken was unrealistic so I took a step back and started to move away from this idea.
Visual Communication Studio Brief 3 Initial Ideas
Initially I planned to do a poster in the style of a classic film poster, though I had trouble coming up with the composition of the piece and balancing all the characters from his different films so i took a step back and changed the focus of my project towards the cinematography of Tarantino's films rather than the more character based approach I was going to take earlier. i came up with the idea of doing a poster of stamps that were thumbnails of shots from Tarantino's films specifically Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill and Inglorious Basterds.
Visual Communication Brief 3 Visual Research
These are just a couple of the drawings I did when watching Tarantino's I'm really happy with how these have turned out, you can see the style develop over these two images and is something I want to take further with this project. I need to think about how I can develop it for the final pieces though i'm nit sure if pencil is the most suitable media for a final piece.
Visual Communication Brief 3 Initial Research
The three people of interest I got for this task was Quentin Tarantino, The Beatles and Tommy Cooper. As soon as I started to do my research I was initially drawn to doing Tarantino as even though i'm not a huge fan of his films I found his visual style to be the most interesting, I would have liked to have done The Beatles but I though that already had to much of a set visual code to them and it would be almost impossible to find something interesting that hasn't been done before and I didn't really just want to do portraits. I also though Tarantino's visual style would complement the way I work and my tone of voice perfectly.
Visual Communication Brief 2 Final Evaluation
Overall I'm very happy with how my finished postcards have turned out, although this was probably one of the most stressful projects i've done on this course as having zero knowledge on how to use illustrator at the start of this task resulted in a lot of trial and error. In the end i came out with a final set of images that I was pleased with although I feel they would have been much stronger if I could have used different medias, Even being able to work in to the slightly in photoshop afterwards just to clean up some of the rough edges would have made them much stronger.
moving forward i can see myself using vectors but it's much more likely I'll use the in a more limited manner than using them for the final image maybe as a base layer to work on top of. though this is probably due to my limited knowledge of illustrator I just thought it made the images much to flat. I also found it very difficult to work without line and base my work of shape and colour.

Visual Language Final Evaluation
I think through out this module the skills I've developed most through out this module is my consideration for line quality and composition, though these are things I was doing before this module I think it was mostly unconsciously and now i've learn about them i'm staring to incorporate them into my work in other modules. I've also started to incorporate shape into my work much more than before. I think learning more about the theories behind some of the principles of image making have really enhanced my understanding and made it much easier to incorporate into my work, I think composition and thumbnails have really developed over the course of the course of this module and I think this is evident in my comic thumbnails i did at the start and the ones I did at the end of the module there is a vast improvement not only in composition but also line of sight and use of frame.
I'm really proud of some of the work I've produced for this module specifically in the later stages when I started exploring digital media more and more, I think my favourite piece I did for this module is the last piece I did of Steven Gerrard which incorporated a lot of what i've learnt over the course of this module such as use of shape, line quality, composition and colour theory it tied together a lot of the things I learnt, the style I used for this piece is definitely something I want to carry on with and develop moving forward as this piece was slightly rough around the edges and could have been improved with more time. I also really enjoyed the collage and using this as a method for developing the composition of a piece especially as the work was more graphics based.
I think there are quite a few parts I could have improved over the curse of this module such as I wish i'd been more experimental with my work and different medias at the start of the module but I think at this point i was stuck in a rut in regards to the direction I took with my work which over the course of this module I've gradually moved away from. I also think the lens based task is definitely something i could have improved but I really struggled with this task, it definitely wasn't one of the strongest projects I've done on this course.
Over the course of this module I have started deconstruct other peoples work more and more especially noticing when theres a really strong use of composition, colour or line of sight in someones work. I've noticed in a lot of peoples work as well such as Olly Moss how key the use of colour is to the pieces and how much stronger it makes the work and how it can be used to create depth within someones work. Overall it's given me a new appreciation of some work that has a strong use of the principles of image making.
Overall I'm really happy with the work I've produced over the course of this module there are obviously some parts I could improve now but I think my work has developed greatly over the course of this module especially in the second brief where we started looking at design principles.

Visual Language Studio Brief 2 Colour, Value and Notan
Pretty early on for this brief I decided I was going to do a piece based on a tv program and began thumb nailing ideas such as the game of thrones ones. I gradually moved away from this and started to look at mad men as I thought it had a really interesting use of colour due to it being set in the 60's and I did the piece below based on Pete Campbell although I wasn't happy with how it turned out as it felt to much like it was a rushed job. a few days later I saw all the hillsborough memorials and decided to do a piece slightly related to that, and due to Liverpool beating manchester city. I traced the figure quickly to get the proportions and likeness right but I felt that if I didn't I wouldn't have time to get the piece to the standard I wanted and this piece is about the use and composition over technical ability. I'm Really happy with how it's turned out, I used the blue to contrast the red shirt and short, to make them really stand out although i do think the composition does look a little bit empty. colour is something i've always struggled with seen as i'm colour blind but I'm happy with the work I've done for this task.
Visual Language Studio Brief 2 Viewpoint and Depth
This is my print I did for the viewpoint and depth task I'm not really happy with how this turned out due to the wonky perspective and bad composition but this is mainly due to me not having my thumbnails with me at the workshop, as I didn't want to take my sketchbook in the rain where it would get ruined. In spite of all this I found the medium very interesting and different to any way i've used printing before as you can get a much higher level of detail and better line quality than with other types of printing.
Visual Language Sequential Part 2
This is a continuation of the thumbnail task we did I started to apply it to a previous idea I had for a comic, I think after these sessions you can really see the improvement over my earlier sequential ideas. I'm really happy with how most of these have turned out, I think one of the problems with my ideas from my earlier work were that I was trying to over complicate my work a page that could be told in 4 or 5 panels I was trying to tell in 9 or 10 which made the composition and line of site really cluttered and hard to follow.
