Visual Narrative Brief 1 Book Questions

These are some of the questions I came up with for our crit, but after the crit I didn't feel like I really was interested in any of these enough to base the book off them. I'm going to have to spend more time looking into coming up with something new.

Visual Narrative Brief 1 Travelling Man

The final place I went to was travelling man the comic shop and I also included some points from thought bubble. I Found the shop interesting but again I was struggling to come up with anything of substance to base my project off.

Visual Narrative Brief 1 PMT

The second place I went to was "PMT" the guitar shop and although I enjoyed looking at the guitars  I don't think there was anything I wanted to base my project off.

Visual Narrative Brief 1 Kirkstall Road

The first place I went to research for this project was an industrial park near "Control" and "vue". I don't think this place was that interesting or useful in the end, although there were some nice photos.

Visual Language Brief 1 Task 6

Observational drawings I did these by doing a continuous line drawing in pencil and then working on top in a brush pen and then i did something different for each image such as dry brush, copics and sharpies to give each image a different look.

Visual Language Brief 1 Task 5

Working with collage I've really enjoyed doing this I decided to work more with layout and taking a more graphic approach to it I feel the third image is the most successful I really like the diagonal layout of the comic book panels it's a shame I didn't enlarge the text on the left side to align with "midngt." image.

Visual Language Texture

This is a piece I was working on to practice working digitally i'm really happy with how it's turned out I definitely think digital art is something i want to carry on working with. Although there are parts of this piece I want to improve on such as the integration of shadow on the face, but some parts work really well such as the shirt. I've recently been teaching myself to work fully digitally learning from online tutorials and youtube videos and I can see the results in my final pieces, I still need to work on the line quality and texture though I'm going to start exploring different brushes soon. I also looked at how i could place a photo underneath my initial drawing and how this would create a texture to an otherwise flat image. It also relates to some of the earliest work I did for visual Language related to character design.

Visual Language Brief 1 Task 4

I started off with these two paper cut pieces I really like these but I felt i wanted to do something slightly different for this task, So i carried on working with silhouettes and filling pages of them as i did more and more i started to include little details and work more and more on composition i like the way the copic marker creates a texture for the shape. After doing this I started to experiment with the different textures you can get from Different markers and the way they bleed on the page, I also looked at how they'd bled through the page and experimented with drawing over the top of these

Visual Language Brief 1 Task 3

Experimenting with line and mark I'm really happy with how these first two images turned out, Although in the first I feel the line quality could be improved as some of the lines are slightly to thick I also thin the hairline could have been improved. The third image was created using a 0.3 fine liner there are obviously parts of this image that could be improved but overall i'm happy with how it turned out. The final image is my favorite although the the line quality on the hair is off i feel the image works really well especially the jacket, It was created using a sharpie.

Visual Language Brief 1 Task 2

working from reference, I think the 3rd drawing is the best I really like the minimal line. it really makes the piece stand out next to the other two. The first one was done with a brush pen, the second done with pencil and the last done with a 0.05 fine liner pen.

The first full figure drawing I did in my opinion was too labored over and looks too stiff  so with the second and third I set myself to do them as quickly and loosely as possible I think this creates a really nice contrast between the three figures on the page. The last image I did was done with as little line as possible and in all honesty it's probably based more of shape than line but I really like the stencil like quality to it.

Visual Skills End of Module Evaluation

I think through out this module I have developed lots of different techniques that at the start of this course I wouldn't have felt confident using at all such as paper cut and working into photographs to create finished illustrations, I have also become much more competent in some medias that at the start of the course I wasn't used to using such as  brush pens and Photoshop. One of the things I feel I've become much better at over this module is problem solving and  getting all my ideas down in a much quicker and a much more effective method, The main place where you can see this is the final brief we did where i worked on a large development sheet and I feel like it's one of the strongest things I've done so far and it's something that I intend to carry on using rather than where I used to retreat into my sketchbook I feel the larger sheets give me much more freedom. One of the things i'm most proud of in this module is that I've worked with a different media for my final piece in each project, This is a big change from the way I used to work where I would rely on fine liners for almost everything I did but changing from this has made my work so much stronger in my opinion. some of the strongest pieces that I've done for this module have been digital and this is something I definitely want to explore in my next project.

I think one of the initial weaknesses in my work for this module was that I would always do development work in my sketchbook rather than on a development sheet and I think this really hurt some of my initial planning, but I addressed this with my final brief and I feel my planning for this was much stronger in addition to working on development sheets I've also bought an A3 sketchbook so even if I do choose to work in it I have a bit more freedom. One of the other weaknesses with my work from this project is I do tend to jump from my initial ideas straight into my final piece but I think this is more down to time constraints, So hopefully for the next project i'll have more time to fully realize and develop my ideas before jumping in. Next time I also intend to rely less on brush pens in my development of ideas as although they help me get my ideas down quickly I feel like i'm becoming much too reliant on them as a media for ideas and I need to use a bit more variety. For my next project I hope to explore digital line work and line quality as we'll have more time to develop ideas i'll be able to explore this in more detail as I was starting to in the final brief. I think most of the things that I feel were weak or that I would have done differently were starting to be done by my final project as I was looking at my feedback and evaluations from the project before and taking it in to account for the next project and changing what needed to be changed in my process. The last thing that I feel I've really improved on throughout this project is the use of my blog as at the start i was really struggling with it i feel tha now i'm much more used to it I feel I have to spend less time working out how to use it I can focus on the brief much more.

Overall I've really enjoyed this module and I started to enjoy it more and more with each brief which I think really shows in my final pieces as I think they've become stronger and stronger with each brief we did and I hope to carry this on with the next module.

Visual Skills Studio Brief 4 Final Piece

This is my final piece for this brief i'm fairly happy with how it's turned out although I would have much preferred to do it digitally as I originally planned , due to not doing it digitally I decided not to include colour or the text and i think this has harmed the piece slightly but I think I would have ruined the pieces by adding colour using a traditional method as i'm not as confident as i would have been working in Photoshop. If i were to do the piece again I would not have cross hatched and shaded the piece so I would have had more time to experiment with colour and might have been able to add it and I think this would have made the pieces much stronger than the cross hatching did, although one of the best decisions I made one this project is to add the black background as it really makes the cross hatching and the figures stand out I just wish the finish was slightly more even for it. After this project the part I most enjoyed was working digitally so  that's something I definitely want to return to and I think it had some of the strongest results out of the work I've done so far. In Hindsight I also think that the composition might have worked better if I would have had all the characters coming out from the center rather than facing each other as it looks too much like there about too fight which takes it too far away from the quote in my opinion. I think I would have also picked one of my other initial ideas as I bit of a bit more than I could chew with this project, to include so many characters and crosshatch it was overly ambitious I should have picked a different idea I would have had more time to experiment with.

Visual Skills Studio Brief 4 Brush Pen Experimentation

I did a practice brush pen version of my final piece over my printed out digital outline, I'm happy with how this turned out but I think the fine liner version was much stronger.
